Editor’s TopHatter Reviews

TopHatter takes the term Entertainment Shopping to the next level. Tophatter is a high-paced free to be auction website which operates hundreds of closing auctions at all times. In our observations, the volume of auctions offered here seems to outpace some of the largest penny auction websites such as Quibids and DealDash.

TopHatter is a bidding website which is similar to eBay in that 1) the items auctioned are done so by sellers, not TopHatter and 2) bids are free. However, we think that this auction site is a lot more fun than eBay!

One important note is that TopHatter is NOT a penny auction. That’s right, NOT a penny auction. Bids are free, always.

TopHatter Auction Features

Top Hatter is unique from other online bidding websites in a few different ways:

  • Free-to-Bid Auctions: All auctions are free to bid. You only pay when you win plus a shipping fee.
  • Many Sellers: Items auctioned on Top Hatter are done so by other vendors. So there are basically thousands of vendors auctioning products at all times. Similar to ebay, but much more fun and fast-paced.
  • High Auction Volume: The volume is really hard to quantify as a user. It’s huge, visit the site and you’ll see.

Bidding Tips

  • Shipping price: Check the shipping price before bidding, some sellers
  • Shipping time: Watch the estimated shipping time. In some cases, it can take a couple weeks for shipping
  • Plan to win: In our experience, we won a good majority of auctions leading us to believe that vendors are willing to sell product at a low cost
  • Cancel if you need to: If you win an auction and don’t want the item, you need to cancel it within your account. Easy to do and avoids your account from being cancelled.

TopHatter.com shipping and fees

As a bidder, Top Hatter does not charge any fees. However, when you win an auction, the seller will charge a shipping fee which in some cases can be more than the price of the item. Just keep an eye on it before bidding.

Is TopHatter a scam?

We don’t think so. TopHatter has a great BBB rating, lots of auctions, and is free to bid. Nothing we see causes concern. Scroll to the bottom of the page to read reviews from other Tophatter customers who also weigh in on whether or not Tophatter is a scam.

TOPHATTER is really the TOP

If you're tired of waiting a week and missing out on winning an auction like other sites TOPHATTER might just be what you're looking for as you can win in 90 seconds and if per chance you lose don't worry the item will appear again soon ! And it cuts out the middle man price increases too !

by Bill Zurbrugg on TopHatter

Don't buy any watches. Mine broke three weeks after I had it and can't get refund. Plus it can't be fixed. Second hand broke on it. Other things I have bought are ok.

I’ve been on Tophatter and downloaded the app…there was one complaint I had. The first time I bid on an item and won it was the wrong item. So I had to go and cancel the bid. When I did so I was told I couldn’t bid because I had cancelled more then once. Which was wrong because that was the first item I’d bid on and won. So I saw what item I had supposedly cancelled and it was some gold ring and I know I didn’t bid on it because I had never bid on anything until the day I had cancelled the bid due it being the wrong one. I did send an email explaining this to Tophatter and never received a response. I’m glad I did read your review, otherwise I planned to never bid on there site again.

I agree with you as I bid on King 6 piece Sheet Set and I won the Bid but upon checking out the only Colors available were Navy Blue, Light Grey and Dark Grey. I cancelled my order because I wanted White, Ivory or Purple. Sure enough I got BAND from bidding for 8 Days. I’ve sent 4 Emails to Customer Service with pictures showing they were advertising ALL Colors with NO REPLY ….
It’s been 3 days since I have paid for items but they still haven’t shipped. FYI The phone # .
405-242-5339 is a Fax # and the Customer Service # I found online 650-251-4424 is an automated line that says the call cannot be answered because it wasn’t online at the moment!

I can’t wait to see my items if they ever get here, what a horrible way to treat people for having a legitimate reason for CANCELING Orders!!

If you think false advertising is a scam then TopHatter is a scam. I have purchased several items that said “18K gold filled” or “Sterling Silver” and neither was true.. The gold filled items, 95% of the time, are Gold Plated and peel of the first few times you wear it….then try sending it back to an address in China! I wrote several letters to TopHatter because they advertise they do not sell knock offs or allow their sellers to print “false adds”, that is a joke and I never heard back from them.
A little advice to the person who decides to bid any way, be sure you examine the item as soon as you get it because almost everything I have received does not have directions, and if it does it is in Chinese! Also be prepared to wait 3 to 4 weeks for your item. Actually, your best bet is go to Aliexpress.com, or DHGate.com the prices are much better and free shipping.

It’s people like this that keep QVC in business. Go to a jewelry store and buy a real ring and stop being a cheap ass

      • Jesse December 20, 2017 at 10:17 am - Reply

I agree that if you want quality, you should pay for quality. but I do think that if they advertise 18k gold that it should be real 18k gold. there is no reason to be misleading unless you are trying to scam someone.

    • Lauren February 1, 2018 at 2:39 am - Reply

Gold filled jewelry is jewelry made of a base metal which is covered with a thin layer of gold. Sounds like you got what was advertised.

The so called retail price is absolutely RIDICULOUS – the savings rendered, ie 93% off – is also RIDICULOUS

  6. Vanessa Stewart December 14, 2017 at 7:33 pm - Reply

Ive been tracking the ‘sellers listed price’ against the vague descriptions for items and each time the price listed is incorrect.
For eg. A remote control drone marked at $920 discounted by 97%! Hogwash. They retail for the tiny 37cm ones at between $35-45.

I won this particular item but cancelled it just to see how easy it would be. Refunded straight away. I’ve seen laptops unbranded listed at over $3000.

I guarantee sometimes the seller makes a buck or two when they are selling tens of thousands of that item. But they are not discounted because they were won at auction.

As for people buying rings… probably read the description in more detail. It probsbly has the clarity there, like night vision lense. In the description it says— will not help you see at night, only low light. Lollllll

    • Dave Kert March 13, 2018 at 3:53 pm - Reply

You get refunded only one or twice, after that you have to return at your expense. 50% of the items I have received are defective (like memory cards) – camera on drone), totally different ( Roman coin from different era than advertised – cheaper era and barely viewable – picture showed awesome), incomplete (stereo Bluetooth ear buds with chagrining case – Got one bud, no charger different color/type) and so on.
They require you return an item with tracking at your expense (even though fake which they say is no go) and to China the post office DOES NOT offer tracking and the shipping cost is MORE than then paid.
I have written (& written) and they keep responding with something about a ‘threshold’ for buyers that “allows” free returns or refunds (one or two and from there on you are responsible).
STAY AWAY. You will only waste money. We need to start a class action suit to stop this and I am working on it. Contact me.

I sell on tophatter and could not agree with you more. Most of the stuff on there is junk, I am not sure if junk is even low enough. After you return a couple of products then their money back guarantee only works if you pay tracked shipping back even if the item is deflective. As a seller, I try to sell quality, real sterling silver, real collectible coins etc; but today broke the camel’s back so to speak tophatter in a so-called experiment in which only they make money and sold them below my cost price and threatened me with barring if I don’t ship the orders. Today, they also cut the prices on almost all my items to where I am selling them at a loss. I am disabled and have a hard time making ends meet so I thought I would try tophatter. A bad mistake since In my experience the fees are over 33% of what the item sells and ships for so on a 1000 total sales 2 weeks they take almost 400 then I have to pay shipping and cost of products so I am lucky to net 200 for the two week period. I would love to join the suit

someone should start a FB post that gets sent around telling peeps to AVOID. I have not received my stuff, as of today, but now I am getting worried about all these negative reviews. Glad to know NOT to attempt to sell on there, also.

My wife got into the Tophatter frenzy and spent over $2000. Its all junk and not worth re-selling. We are willing to join any class action law suit that is working to make Tophatter change the deceptive practices.

      • Ravensloft April 14, 2018 at 10:17 am - Reply

Class Action yes. I’ll join in as a co-plaintiff.

    • Donald Blevins March 31, 2018 at 5:10 am - Reply

It’s a gamble, a good rule is to never bid above $10, that way if you do get a junk item then its not a huge loss. I’ve got about 15 items from auctioning and about 4 of them was basically junk and not worth the amount I paid during auction.

The thing is, I see a lot people commenting that the app/website is a scam and that they only provide junk, not true. Top Hatter is just a tool for vendors to sell their clearance items (JUNK). So for now if there is a problem with what you received from the auction, then the majority of your complaint should be directed at the ones manufacturing/selling the items in the first place. To use an analogy: you dont SUE the manufacturer of the car for running over your pet, you SUE the DRIVER. I would like to believe that the people that run Tophatter realize the issue and are doing the best to separate the good vendors from the bad, but to do this we need to write reviews and other stuff on the app or website about the items they received, when they get enough poor/bad reviews then they ban or blacklist the vendor from selling junk. Unfortunately, the majority of the people here don’t have the patience to go through that process.

The best advice I can offer is: Use some common sense when making a bid, if it is something you dont really need then don’t bid and even if you do need it, don’t go over $10. I got my Fiance a couple of Lior Paris Gold Night and Day cream for less than $10 total and the retail value for both were about $50 (I looked online and compared prices)

Most that i got is cheap Chinese junk. You get what you pay for is the saying and very true with this. Want something cheap ? this is the place to get your Chinese junk sent directly from China.

Wished i would have read reviews before bidding. My first win was an alarm clock, needless to say it came from China. It was in a flimsy little box,no padding and cheap crap.So dissapointed it wasn’t nothing like the picture and it wasn’t worth sending it back for refund. Then stupid me bid on a drone that came from China in a broken up styro foam mold,it too looked like cheap junk .It should have been in a box with Pics on it and Company that manufactured it.No info of any kind.Drone was also damaged .Instruction manual a joke.No model or company info just a few drawings on how to control it and install batteries.A third item was a bluetooth headphone set.It was very cheap made(crap)Kind of like the headphones you get on an Airplane. These were X-mas presents for my Daughter.I just lost my job of 8 years (couldn’t get unemployment because I was considered selfemployed) and thought of tophatter as a blessing,I didn’t expect top dollar stuff for near to nothing but what I got was far from decent and I could have purchased a drone for less in a store and then I would have at least had a company name and info on getting spare parts.Other than getting what You pay for it’s like Donald Goodman said Chinese Junk from China.

I joined TopHatter and within seconds I was placing my Bid(s), I unexpectedly won a smartwatch. Funny Listing price was something like $2599.00. Now, why would anybody sell anything like that for $8.00? I have not received the watch yet but for 8 dollars I’m not expecting an Apple iWatch

I purchased several items over about a 6 week period. I wish that I had just purchased one or two and waited for delivery to check their quality. That would have been the end of any further purchases. I purchased items as Christmas gifts having not used the site before. Items purchased included a leather women’s purse, a set of woodworking chisels, a drone, some jewelry, and some clothing items. Without exception everything I purchased was terrible quality. The purse arrived with stains on the inside, a broken zipper on the outside, and had a very bad smell. The set of woodworking chisels were just toys. I suppose you could use them on clay, but they would not last for more than a few strikes of a wood mallet on even the softest woods. The drone was maybe 4″ across, would not charge properly, and never worked. The jewelry was very cheap costume jewelry at best, and the clothing would not have fit a size 4, evern though it was ordered as a woman’s large. I will NEVER EVER waste my time on their website again. After hearing how impossible it is to return anything it is all going straight into the trashl Lesson learned.

I just won my first cheap bid today. I should have read the reviews first. Not expecting anything top notch after reading the reviews. Just Sad!!

  12. Jimmy Riddle December 31, 2017 at 8:34 pm - Reply

From first hand experience i can categorical state that TopHatter is a scam. First most of the items are from Chine or warehouses they stock in the USA. They do 90second auctions just so that you do not have enough time to read the full listing details. They show items like wrenches in sets when you win you find out you paid for just one wrench. Back up cameras are pictured as the full item video screen camera and wiring, again you find that its just a useless camera. I personally had won items and received a completely different item 3 weeks later. Then you have to go to the trouble of mailing it back and wait another 3 weeks for a refund. Thier advertising promotes them as an Amazon killing site, that will never happen if they keep up these shady practices?

  13. Pcolapaul January 7, 2018 at 1:05 pm - Reply

I too purchased several items, the quality is terrible. I don’t mind paying a few dollars for some costume jewelry I will give the kids, I know what I am getting. I got duped with the back up camera that listed a monitor in the ad. They did refund my money on that, a doll I ordered was not much bigger than you would get in a happy meal and worse quality. I discourage any purchases if you are thinking you are getting a bargain, it is what everyone’s been saying, cheap crap.

  14. Dan January 7, 2018 at 9:36 pm - Reply

The company doesn’t like it if you cancel an order. The problem is that some of the pictures are misleading.
I rejected to bids I won because they were not what the picture showed. They have locked me out and won’t respond to my emails. Not to mention that an order I paid for hasn’t arrived and they ignore me about it.

    Horrible customer relations.

  15. Ron January 10, 2018 at 11:23 pm - Reply

I won two items from them. I receive one item then returned the item and never received my refund, the second order I never received at all. They have taken my money and never contacted me to fix the issues. DO NOT USE THIS SITE!!!!! The pictures are misleading and they send you a return label so big you can’t print it out I down sized it 200% and would barely fit on a regular piece of paper. Then after contacting them about it they said that it was over thirty days. This site has been a rip off so far!!!!!! I’m warning you now do not use this site.

  16. Marian January 15, 2018 at 4:26 pm - Reply

Have bought many things from Top Hatter and it is Chinese junk. Too many knockoffs like LQL dolls for LOL dolls. Pokémon, My little pony figures OK. Mario was not Nintendo. Depending on what you buy there are deals. Jewelry not real when advertised 925 sterling silver, costume jewelry ok. Just do not buy anything marked gold or silver because it is not real. Both male and female clothing not good. Sizes are incorrect, some products are not even finished. Left over seconds, stay away from.

I bought several items from this site before reading reviews. It was a very big mistake. Its true that 99% of the items are made/shipped from China, which means that the items are extremely cheap. I’ve been happy with 2 of the 30 items that I’ve purchased, content with 3 more, unhappy with 5, and completely dissatisfied with 20. Most of the items barely resemble what is pictured on the site. Buyer beware!

Get good items from TMart or Aliexpress. Direct from china but decent quality and priced a little below walmart. Sometimes can get pretty good deals. I’ve ordered many things from them and have not been disappointed. At least you can see what you are getting.

I joined and waited because I wanted to make sure the products were legit. And I am glad I waited. As i got reminders about what i wanted to bid on (nikon Cameras) as my favourite product to bid on, i noticed they never came up….Thats because they are brand named products. The i did a little more research and noticed that all the products people are bidding on don’t actually have a brand name associated to them, they are all cheep and knock offs. I unsubscribed and thank goodness never bid on anything. Also, have a kook at the prices of the products that are suggested then crossed out with the suggested %99 off. The original value is way off stating something like $1200 for an SD card. Total scam folks, dont get caught up in purchasing any of this stuff.

I have so far ordered 4 items and had them delivered from this site. The first item was a GPS TRACKER that was supposed to be accessible through my smart phone. The app gave my phone a virus which caused a siren to go off on my phone which wouldn’t stop until I uninstalled the app. I asked for a refund. I got an immediate refund no questions asked and they said to keep the useless bit of plastic tgey sent me which is now in the bin.
The second item was a Samsung wireless charger which did not work with my Galaxy s8 as it was stated it would.
Again, I recieved an immediate refund. And got to keep the useless item.
The third item was a Harry Potter wooden music box. Absolutely delightful, I love it.
The 4th item was a ring advertised as ” a genuine aquamarine set in 925 sterling silver.
The ring is pretty, but it isn’t a genuine stone and nor is it sterling silver. Very disappointed.
I mean, I wasn’t expecting that the aquamarine was REAL. But I was expecting sterling silver, not cheap metal.
I applied for a refund. They said I will have to get a tracking number and send it back.
Not worth the hassle, I paid $12 postage already!
Lesson learned. Don’t buy anything jewellery related, as it’s all fake crap, don’t buy any electronics, again all fake, cheap crap.
I do love the music box though!

I bid on and had the winning bid on several drones with camera. Three time I won with a cheep bid and the item was taken off before I could pay. Five times I have won and after about 4 to 6 weeks, i received a refund with no explanation. I have had two refunded in the last few days. It seems to me that if the winning bid is lower than the seller wants, after they use your money for 4 to 6 weeks, then they refund. I also believe these sellers and one and the same. Why doesn’t Tophatter police there sellers and not allow this. The bidders are the ones that keep Tophatter in business. I am very disappointed with them. I am waiting on two drones now and probably will not receive them. I did notice that the drones with cameras have been removed from bidding within the last few days.

Tophatter is a scam. Don’t fall for it. I ordered two things. They came from China. Sterling silver was cheap metal. An iPad was a cheap knockoff but didn’t work. Top Hatter refused to honor their guarantee. To ship something back to China for a refund would be way more expensive than the item cost. Don’t use tophatter. Find an honest bidding site.

  26. Susan Cole February 17, 2018 at 1:05 am - Reply

Scam, buyer beware it is junk, junk and more junk. The company will not pay for shipping back damaged and nonworking items. Do not fall for this company, they claim they have an A+ rating with the BBB. I don’t believe it, their business practices are terrible. We bid on 2 pillows that show to be full size bamboo pillows and when we received them, they were pillows for small children which the picture was not shown on the item. They posted a picture of the back of the package. Everything we have received like drones were junk and did not work. The electronics don’t work, tablets, cd player and camera’s. You can find better product at the dollar store. Beware of this company. They are not worth the aggravation. It is also difficult to get hold of customer service. They show the value of an item to be expensive, another lie, you can pull up a similar item on Amazon and the prices are so inflated, I cannot believe this company is allowed to do business like this.

Absolutely the cheapest quality products on the planet. I bought the light up butterfly’s that stick on the wall for my daughter. Turned them on once for 10 minutes and 3 are dead already. Also bought a nintendo and drone. They bought did not work upon there arrival. These items are shipped all the way from China, which i didn’t realize at first or I never would have bought stuff from this site, and the sellers just wrap the items in thin garbage bags and tape them with no fragile stickers or anything. Obviously they are going to get thrown around coming all the way from China. I also bought a volt multimeter that appeared to be normal meter. When it arrived it was a tiny palm sized meter and it was not the same rated category as it said on the website. This is one of the biggest scam websites Ive ever seen. BUYERS BEWARE!!!!!! SCAM SCAM SCAM SCAM. Horrible quality and even worst customer service

To date I have won at least 15 bids, they give you an approximate date of arrival and done items were shipped before date. I ordered a 300 hole shower head when it arrived I thought it was a piece of junk, however I installed anyway and it works great and the best shower ever. I have not been dissatisfied as yet. People please read before you bid. You can not expect jewelry to bid real for $3.00. I never bid over $10.00 with free shipping and if I have to pay for shipping my bid will total $10.00 . be smart and gave fun.

I won a bid, paid for it and after 3 days no shipment update for the product. I tried to cancelled this bid and ask for a refund after reading some reviews here, but got a mail from the supplier that my request for refund is unaccepted.
Is it possible to press for legal charges? I thought buyers can cancel or ask for a refund before their purchase is shipped. Can anyone advise me please.

5 years ago TopHatter was much smaller and more like Etsy with local sellers. The auctions took more time then they do now and the prices were more expensive. They have changed and I would not buy anything from them because they prices are too low and are obviously indicating the stuff is crap. However I just got an email form them wanting me to rate my most recent purchase – from 2012? Yup the stuff in 2012 is fine – but I won’t give them a good rating that they can use to fleece the public today 🙂

I seen the zapper light bulb go up for auction. I had bought one at Walmart for I think $20 just to see if it works. They had it retailed for $293 dollars knew right them this isn’t good. if they lie right at the start of the deal it can only get worse. And the way your all talking. it’s sounds like a scam.

I’ve won quite a few items since I began bidding on this site…some I’ve been disappointed in & others I’ve been pleasantly surprised by. I’ve never had an issue with customer service and have been refunded monies even when I haven’t asked for a refund. On one occasion, I was missing one piece of a 4 piece set, and upon bringing it to their attention, I was refunded. Two other separate occasions, stones were missing from rings, and again, I was promptly refunded. Any questions I’ve had have been answered in a timely manner. The only other thing (other than the few disappointing items) that I take issue with is being banned from bidding. I understand the first time I was banned was because there were multiple cancelled items…shame on me. I was banned again tonight after cancelling an item. It was stated that the reason was for excessive cancellations…I thought I paid for my cancellations with the first banning incident…guess not. I’ll just have to pay better attention in the future.

Lots of stuff from China. If I don’t mind waiting 30 days for Delivery. And, what if I want to send back?
Lots of negatives, to deal with to save $5.00. Lots of overpriced shipping fees. I have cross checked items on this site to Ebay. Not much difference, and you get it in 2-3 day on Ebay or Amazon, with Free Shipping on most! If I get a deal for $5.00 and the shipping is $8.00 and I have to wait 30 days for delivery.
    Not a Great Deal!

I have purchased several items from this website. I have learnt that you can go to the website of the item being auctioned and see how much it is to buy now. I read all the descriptions and then decide if I want to bid. I have received a few items that are cheap and nasty but have also received some beautiful items. I only pay with paypal and if I pay and decide to cancel the item I get a full refund. If I receive the item and it is not as described I get a full refund and they tell me to keep the item. I have sent several emails and have received quick and polite and helpful replies. Yes there is cheap stuff on there and the jewellery states gold plated and I have brought several pieces and given them to friend family for presents and they love them. I have cancelled several items and have been banned for 24hrs from bidding and in a way that is good for me and I watch what is selling and what people are bidding for. There is no where you can get something worth a lot of money for nearly nothing. Yes buyer beware and research the buyer and prices and just buy what you really want. I have found all the staff from Tophatter to be efficient and friendly and helpful. I did send an item back and got a consignment number and it cost me a lot to send it back but the item I purchased cost me a lot as it was an ipad. I got a full refund from paypal for postage and when the item arrived back got a full refund for the item and postage to me. You get what you pay for and sometimes you get a great deal and a beautiful item. I dont this site is a scam I think you just have to be aware of what you are getting. Most of the items are from china and some of the goods are great. Hope this helps anyone thinking of bidding on this website. You win some and you lose some. As they say you done get anything for nothing. Also I am from Australia and some of the stuff is only for American power plugs. I had to pay for my return goods but from America you get return shipping paid for. Thank you Tophatter

I have made 2 different orders with Bed Bath Fashions. In both cases I won an auction low. for completely different items I got the same “excuse” and they “refunded” the amounts (which I haven’t seen yet)!

“Reason: In stock items are damaged”

Guess what, the “damaged” stock is still in the auction! Guess the unethical company didn’t like my low bid!

I’ve bought some extremely inexpensive jewelry – like a few dollars per item, and another few dollars shipping. Everything looked like the pictures shown, and came quickly and nicely packaged. My comment is that it’s hard, if not impossible, to tell what’s real or fake. Example: Genuine silver plated 1.5 carat solitaire earrings. What’s genuine? the silver plate? Probably. And yes, they were indeed earrings, each with one stone hence solitaires. The size appeared to be about as advertised. Nowhere did it SAY diamond, and nobody with half a brain would expect 1.5 carat diamonds for a few dollars. But the description also never SAID Cubic Zirconia, or CZ, or lab-created, or faux. Nor did it say diamonds. So here’s my complaint – the sellers should be required to state exactly what they are selling. genuine diamonds? lab-created “diamonds”? cubic-zirconia? or what? I bought some earrings listed as pink coral, color orange. They are pink, maybe a pinkish orange. But are they made of coral, as in from the sea? Isn’t that protected? Or were they using the word “coral” as a color clarification? Am I wearing pinkish-coral colored plastic or resin of some kind? Or am I wearing polished chunks of pinkish coral from the ocean? Ther’es no way to know! TH does have a section for the seller to list “material” and some will just say “silver” or “gold plated” but I have yet to see any who will identify the STONE, the presumably featured part of the jewelry item. I will assume that given the price they are all faux, inexpensive costume jewelry.

An addendum to my comment of April 24 at 2:49 AM – Search for pink sapphire, and find this auction by seller liluzhen:
“Natural Gemstone Jewelry 925 Solid Sterling Silver Pink Sapphire Diamond Bride Wedding Floral Band Ring Size 5-12:

“Natural Gemstone” in the title is informative, as is “Diamond” (the ring has tiny colorless gemstone accents), but note the contradiction between “Solid Sterling Silver” in the title and this “Material: Silver plated” in the description. CLARITY and HONESTY is all I ask – real or faux? solid or plated? And carat weight would also be nice. TopHatter Customer Service, if you read this, please, addressing these concerns would greatly improve your site!
